Correction: We have withdrawn the unsupported claim that a new policy guarantees faster family-petition processing. A published estimate is not a promised decision date for an individual family.

Use the correct form, category and office

USCIS explains that its processing-time information depends on the form, category and office handling the case. Use the receipt notice to identify the case details and follow the agency’s instructions if a case has moved between offices.

An estimate and an inquiry date are different

The posted processing time describes completed cases; it does not decide the outcome of a pending application. The case-inquiry tool uses the receipt date to indicate when a question about a delayed case may be submitted. Check again when needed because the agency updates its information.

Keep notices and deadlines organized

Keep copies of receipt notices and agency correspondence. A pending petition, an online status message, or a processing estimate does not by itself establish work authorization or excuse a response deadline. Ask for an individual review before making travel or employment decisions.
