AMLO and Biden to invest 1.5 billion on US – Mexico border

Both presidents work together to improve security at the US – Mexico border. What does this mean for immigrants?

Along with their continued efforts to improve communication and relations between the two countries, Joe Biden and Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) met to plan the future of Mexico and the United States. This is how, after multiple twists and turns, both leaders jointly communicated to the press that Mexico will invest some $1.5 billion to improve security on the US – Mexico border.

This critical investment, which will bring new and more modern control technologies to the border, is expected to have positive effects on both parties. They seek to improve the commercial exchanges that take place between both countries, and especially, the passage of people across the border.

An ongoing path of reconciliation and bilateral agreements has the US – Mexico border in its crosshairs

Since the era of former President Donald Trump, attempts have been made to make this type of agreement with the Mexican government. Finally, it was Joe Biden who was able to talk and reach agreements with AMLO on regulations and security on the US – Mexico border.

The leaders agree on the importance of a resilient, strong border, much safer for all, and capable of handling any type of conflict. These changes and investments would definitely improve trade between both countries, and this was the main engine of the agreement.

“We are committed like never before to completing a joint, multi-year US – Mexican border infrastructure modernization effort for projects along the 2,000-mile border.”

What impact will these new measures have on the immigrant community?

In addition, this investment decision was made in conjunction with a series of possible agreements to improve conditions and regularize immigration. For example, an increase in the number of work visas issued, creating a bilateral working group on labor migration pathways and worker protections, and welcoming more refugees.

“This is a proven strategy that drives economic growth and reduces irregular migration.”

Joe Biden also said in the joint statement.

After the serious conflicts on the border between the United States and Mexico, which lead thousands of immigrants to cross without any type of security that they will reach the other side safely and to make decisions that will have a negative impact on their future, driven by the need to emigrate; both presidents are debating the importance of changes in border security.

It’s no secret that the relationship between the United States and Mexico has been strained in recent years. However, despite the current tensions, the two countries have a long history of cooperation on issues related to immigration. In fact, working together on the border has always been in the best interest of both countries. Cooperation between the United States and Mexico on the border is beneficial for both countries. It helps to reduce crime, while also protecting the rights of immigrants.

Although this step is more oriented to the economic interests of the governments in power, it can have a positive impact on the immigrant community. Discussions about increasing the number of visas issued, improvements in security technology, and raising awareness of the importance of immigrant labor in the US will make a significant difference in the lives of thousands of families that are looking to emigrate to the United States.
